Newport & Carisbrooke Brickworks

The Isle of Wight’s central region especially Newport, Carisbrooke, and Gunville had a rich legacy of brickmaking that shaped both its architecture and industry. Gunville Brickworks was founded in the late 18th century by William Pritchett listed as a brick tile, and pipe manufacturer in 1904 later acquired by Sam Saunders of Saunders Roe Shipbuilding. A railway siding opened in 1899 to serve the site facilitating the transport of bricks . The 100 foot chimney a local landmark was demolished in 1981 to make way for Alvington Manor View. A massive thank you to Mark Earp and Kitbridge Enterprise Trust for putting on the display.
