Credit: Gary NewmanLance Corporal
8th Battalion Isle of Wight Rifles
Hampshire Regiment
Thomas was born 1895 in the Parish of Whippingham to Thomas & Caroline of Garret's Farm, Newport. In 1901 Thomas was recorded as living at Chippingwell, Pan Lane which was actually on St. George's Down.
Thomas died on the 29th of October 1915 in Malta. It is unclear how he died, perhaps from wounds received in Gallipoli or from injury or illness.
From the spring of 1915, the hospitals & convalescent depots established on the islands of Malta & Gozo dealt with over 135,000 sick & wounded, chiefly from the campaignes in Gallipoli & Salonika. Thomas is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery in Malta & rests beneath one of the few Private Memorials still to be found in Military Cemeteries abroad.
Thomas is also remembered on the Arreton & IW Rifles War Memorials.
