George was born 1892 in Carisbrooke to George & Jane (nee VOCKINS) ASH, who were living at 37 Holyrood Street, Newport around the time of George's death. Before the War, George was a clerk with the Isle of Wight Central Railway.

George served in Gallipoli, Turkey where he was wounded, & evacuated to a hospital on Malta. Aged 23, George died of his wounds on the 2nd of October 1915.

The earth on Malta is shallow & many joint & collective burials were carried out as the graves had to be cut out of the rock. George is buried in the Pieta Military Cemetery, in Section B Row XVIII Grave 5, in a collective grave, together with Private J PULESTON of the Middlesex Regiment & Private F POLLDORE of the 19th Australian Infantry.

George is also remembered on the Newport Borough & IW Rifles War Memorials.
