Basra & Iraq Role of HonourCredit: CWGC

Lance Corporal
1st/6th Battalion
Hampshire Regiment

George was born 1898 in Newport to George William John & Lilian Mary (nee SLATER) FRY who were living at 6 Albert Street in Newport around the time of George’s death. The family had previously lived at 14 Clarendon Street in Newport.

George served at Gallipoli in August of 1915 where he was wounded in the hand by shrapnel. He went on to serve in Mesopotamia, modern day Iraq, & died, aged 20, from smallpox on the 14th of November 1918. He was buried beneath a Commission Headstone in the Amara War Cemetery in Iraq alongside 4,620 of his First World War comrades. However, due to the political situation in Iraq the cemetery is no longer maintainable & so their names are recorded in a Role of Honour at the CWGC HQ in Maidenhead.

George is also remembered on the County & Newport Borough War Memorials.
