1st/8th Battalion Isle of Wight Rifles
Hampshire Regiment

George was born 1896 in Niton to Austen Daniel & Alice Bertha (nee RICE) GUY who were living at 37 Elm Grove in Newport around the time of George’s death.

On the 12th of August 1915, elements of the 163rd Brigade advanced to occupy the ridge of hills in front of them, & in doing so, cut off the enemy in the area of ANZAC Beach & cape Helles, in order to dominate the Dardanelles Straight. During this first attack, 8 officers & over 300 Rifles were either killed or missing.

George, aged 18, was one of those missing that day & his body was never found or identified & so he is commemorated by the Commission on the Helles Memorial at Gallipoli in Turkey together with over 20,000 of his First World War comrades.

George is also remembered on the Newport Borough & IW Rifles War Memorials.
