Joseph was born 1891 in Newport to George & Annie (nee PENNY) HAYLES.

Joseph, aged 25, was Killed in Action on the 27th of June 1916 & originally buried in the cemetery beneath a Commission Headstone. However, in 1933 all of the headstones were removed from this cemetery when it was discovered that salts in the soil were causing them to deteriorate. Instead, a screen wall was erected within the Amara War Cemetery in Iraq with the 3,704 names of those buried in the cemetery engraved upon it.

Joseph is also remembered on the Newport Borough War Memorial.
