Alfred was a regular soldier, serving with the Dorsetshire Regiment in Poona, India in 1911. During the Great War they were deployed to Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) where Alfred was taken prisoner. He died, aged 28, in captivity on the 23rd of August 1916 & rests in the North Gate Cemetery in Iraq. Originally beneath a Commission Headstone, however these were removed in the 1990’s & due to the political situation not as yet replaced.
