George was born 1895 in Apse Health to Thomas & Charlotte MEECHAM who were living in Clatterford Road, Carisbrooke around the time of George’s death.

On the 12th of August, together with others of the 163rd Brigade, The Rifles advanced to occupy the ridge of hills in front of them, & in doing so, cut off the enemy in the area of ANZAC Beach & cape Helles, in order to dominate the Dardanelles Straight. During this first attack, 8 officers & over 300 Rifles were either killed or missing.

George, aged 20, was listed as Missing Presumed Killed in Action on the 12th of August 1915. His body was never found or identified & so George is commemorated by the Commission upon the Helles Memorial to The Missing at Gallipoli in Turkey together with 20,962 of his missing First World War comrades.
