Serjeant
1st/5th Hampshire Howitzer Battery
Royal Field Artillery

Harry was born 1878 in Newport to Henry & Sarah (nee GUY) PITMAN who were living at Pan Cottages, Shide in Newport around the time of Harry’s death. In 1903 at Newport Registry Office, he married Adelaide MATTHEWS & lived at 5 Malvern Terrace also in Shide.

Harry, aged 37, died whilst a prisoner of war in Iraq on the 3rd of December 1916. His final resting place remains unknown & so Harry was commemorated by the Commission on the Basra Memorial. However, due to the current pollical situation this memorial is unmaintainable & so these 40,632 soldiers are further commemorated in Roles of Honour held at the Commission’s HQ in Maidenhead, UK.

Harry is also remembered on the County & Newport Borough War Memorials.
