1st/5th Hampshire Howitzer Battery
Royal Field Artillery

William was born 1896 in Newport to Henry & Nellie (nee ASHWIN) PORTER of 23 Chapel Street in Newport.

William, aged 20, is commemorated on the Angora Memorial within the North Gate Cemetery in Iraq. William would have been a prisoner of war in a camp in Angora who subsequently died in captivity & has no know grave. Angora (Ankara) was a prison camp located in the Vilayet of Angora in Anatolia in west central Turkey. An important commercial center, Angora was 220 east-southeast of Constantinople & built on a hill. The city lay on the Constantinople to Baghdad Railway line, on the Angora River. The Turks incarcerated Allied prisoners, primarily 300 British POW's, in a prison camp outside of the city. The Turks employed most of these men in a labour detachment, constructing a single narrow gauge railroad line between Angora & Erzerum.

William is also remembered on the County & Newport Borough War Memorials.
