Private
2nd Battalion
Dorsetshire Regiment

Samuel was born 1879 in Newport, the youngest son to George & Emily (nee BEERE) POWELL. George had predeceased his son. The family had previously lived in Tin Pit Lane, Carisbrooke (1881), 4 Worsley Road (1891) & 66 Hunnyhill (1901) both in Newport before moving to Ryde.

Samuel, aged 35, was reported as Killed in Action on the 14th of April 1915 & is buried in the Basra Cemetery in Iraq. Originally buried beneath a Commission Headstone that was removed in the early 1990’s for safety by the British Army. However, due to the current pollical situation it has not been possible to replace them. Therefore, until able to do so, the Commission commemorates the 2,560 soldiers within the cemetery on Roles of Honour at their HQ in Maidenhead, UK.

Samuel is also remembered on the County & Ryde War Memorials.
