Edwin was born 1895 in Newport to William & Ellen (nee SALTER) RANN who were living at 27 Castle Road in Newport around the time of Edwin’s death.
Edwin, aged 23, died in Basra, Iraq from influenza on the 4th of November 1918. He was originally buried beneath a Commission, Headstone in the North Gate Cemetery in Iraq, bearing the Family Inscription: “ABSENT FROM BODY PRESENT WITH THE LORD COR. II” which was chosen by his mother alongside 4,486 of his First & Second World comrades. However, these were removed in the 1990’s & due to the political situation not as yet replaced. Until that time these soldiers are commemorated in a Role of Honour held at CWGC HQ in Maidenhead.
Edwin is also remembered on the County & Newport Borough War Memorials. His brother Arthur Alfred also fell in The Great War.
