James was born 1891 in Newport to James & Jane (nee COX) READ of 55 Sea Street in Newport.

James, aged 24, was listed as Missing Presumed Killed in Action on the 12th of August 1915. His body was never found or identified & so James is commemorated by the Commission upon the Helles Memorial to The Missing at Gallipoli in Turkey together with 20,962 of his First World War comrades.

James is also remembered on the Newport Borough & IW Rifles War Memorials.
