Gloucestershire Regiment

Charles was born in Newport in 1897 to George & Clare (nee MOREY) REYNARD & lived at one time at 15 Victoria Road in Newport.

The German Army resisted tenaciously & repeated attacks & counter attacks meant a major battle for every village, copse & farmhouse gained. At the end of September, Thiepval was finally captured. The village had been the original objective of the 1st July. Attacks north & east continued throughout October & into November in increasingly difficult weather conditions. The Battle of the Somme finally ended on the 18th of November with the onset of winter.

Charles, aged 19, was listed as Missing in Presumed in Action on the 9th of September 1916, & is commemorated by the Commission on the largest Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval, Somme in France together with 72,306 of his First World War comrades.

Charles is also remembered on the County & Newport Borough War Memorials. His surname appears misspelt by the CWGC.
