Lance Corporal
1st/7th Battalion
The Queen's Royal (West Kent) Regiment

Ronald was born 1918 in Newport to Frank Michael & Rosina Bertha (nee ROGERS) SALERO who were living at 29 Ash Road in Newport around the time of Ronald’s death.

Ronald had previously survived Operation Dynamo, the historic evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940, but lost his life, aged 23, on the 20th of September 1914. He was travelling home, on leave, to the Island aboard the passenger ferry PS Portsdown, when she struck a mine whilst transiting from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head. The ship split in half & sank rapidly with the loss of 23 lives. Roanld’s body was never recovered from the sea & so he is commemorated by the Commission upon the Brookwood Memorial in Surrey together with 3,315 of his Second World War comrades.

Ronald is also remembered on the Newport Borough War Memorial.
