SIMMONDS, Arthur Edwin

Basra & Iraq Roles of Honour, UKCredit: CWGC

Gunner
76th Battery 10th Brigade
Royal Field Artillery

Arthur was born 1891 in Newport, the eldest son, of James & Emma Annie (nee JACOBS) SIMMONDS who were living at ‘Spring Vale’ Castle Street in Carisbrooke around the time of Arthur’s death. The family had previously lived at 23 Portland Street in Newport.

It was reported that Arthur, aged 23, had died of dysentery at the Ahivaz Hospital (possibly in Iran) on the 6th of August 1915. Arthur was buried in the Basra War Cemetery beneath a Commission Headstone alongside 2,559 of his First World War comrades, 76 of whom remain unidentified. However, due to the current political situation this cemetery is no longer maintainable, & so the Commission also commemorates these soldiers in Roles of Honour held at their HQ in Maidenhead, UK.

Arthur is also remembered on the County & Carisbrooke War Memorials.
