WILLIAMS, Charles Frederick

Helles Memorial, Gallipoli TurkeyCredit: CWGC

Private
2nd Battalion
Hampshire Regiment

Charles was born 1892 in Newport to Alfred & Sarah Jane (nee GUTTERIDGE) WILLIAMS who were living at ‘Westminster’, Gunville Road in Carisbrooke around the time of Charles’ death. There appears to be a discrepancy between IW County birth records & the CWGC Casualty record.

Charles, aged 20, according to CWGC records, was listed as Missing Presumed Killed in Action on the 13th of August 1915. His body was never found or identified & so Charles is commemorated by the Commission on the Helles Memorial to The Missing at Gallipoli in Turkey, alongside 20,961 of his First World War comrades.

Charles is also remembered on the Carisbrooke War Memorial.
