William was born 1889 in Gibraltar to William & Mary Ann WILLIAMS who were living at 3 Portland Street, Newport at the time of William’s death in 1917.

A regular soldier, William, aged 27, was reported as Killed in Action on the 27th of July 1917 while digging a gun-pit in a forward position, which was constantly under fire. William & his friend, Gunner FINNERTY, were killed almost instantaneously by a high explosive shell bursting between them. They were buried, next to each other, the next day in the little Canada Farm Cemetery in Belgium close by beneath a Commission Headstone alongside 905 of their First World War comrades. William’s father declined a Family Inscription.

William is also remembered on the County & Newport Borough War Memorials.
