Civilian War Dead
National Role of Honour

Although not classed as a 'War Grave', George is still recorded by the Commonweath War Graves Commission as 'Civilian War Dead' as he died as a result of enemy action during World War 2.

George was born on the 25th March 1893 in Newport to William & Mercy Fanny (nee JONES) WOODMORE. He married Gertrude Elsie TOOGOOD in 1914 at St. John's Church & lived at 3 St. John's Road, in Newport. Frederick was a member of the Fire Guard Service.

On the night of the 25th of June 1944, a V1 Flying-bomb landed on Carisbrooke Road; the national policy was a total news black-out for V1 ‘hits’ & casualties, thus newspaper reports make no mention of how George died, aged 51.
